 ASSIGNMENT ON Chomsky & Herman, "Bloodbaths in Indochina:..." AND
              Newsweek, "Pacification's Deadly Price."

     Please study carefully Chapter 5, "Bloodbaths in Indochina:
Constructive, Nefarious and Mythical," from _The Washington Connection
and Third World Fascism_ (Boston, 1979).

     Then write 300 words about the CONCEPTS of "atrocity",
"terrorism," "bloodbath."How are these concepts used? What are they
taken to refer to? 

     Please discuss at least (1) Operation SPEEDY EXPRESS (discussed
in Chomsky and Herman, and also in _Newsweek_ by Kevin Buckley); and
(2) the "Phoenix" campaign. 

     Be sure to pick at least THREE specific paragraphs in the chapter to analyze 
closely. Try to avoid over-generalizing, and concentrate closely on the text of the 
chapter and the paragraphs you pick.
