Please read the selections from Race's study War Comes to Long An here
These few pages give some of the main ideas of Race's analysis. They deal with the main economic question of the war -- the land question. Please read the section carefully.
Then please listen very carefully to the 8 minutes or so of the McGehee tape on the land question in Vietnam. This 8 minutes begins about 31 1/2 minutes into the tape of McGehee's lecture. It is here, just the part I am assigning.
If you prefer, you may download this section to your hard drive by right-clicking here (PC's only -- I don't know how to do this with a Mac). Then use RealPlayer to open the File (remember the folder you downloaded it to). You will not have to worry about "Internet speed" when you listen to it.
The point is, listen to it very attentively.
For the whole McGehee lecture, see the links on our Home Page.
Then write 300 words, or a little more, on what 'Chan' -- a defector from the National Liberation Front, or pro-communist forces -- has to say about the peasantry, the land, and the support for the NLF among the peasantry.
What is Chan's analysis of the reasons for NLF support? How does this accord with what McGehee discovered about the method of Communist organizing in the villages, when he was sent by the C.I.A. to Vietnam?
