     ASSIGNMENT #2 ON SECONDARY SOURCES

The purpose of this assignment is to study a small number of
secondary sources -- by which we mean scholarly, research works -- in
more depth.

By "scholarly, research studies" or "secondary sources", I mean
works of research that appear to be (1) studies of primary sources,
not merely studies of other studies; (2) studies that contain
references, in the form of footnotes, to evidence, in order to support
all major conclusions which the study reaches.

     Here is your assignment:

     1. Locate, xerox, read, and make careful notes, on AT LEAST FOUR
scholarly studies of your topic.

     2. Make sure that AT LEAST TWO of them are from scholarly
articles, in scholarly journals.

Make sure that AT LEAST TWO of them are from scholarly BOOKS.

     3. Read, and make careful notes on, AT LEAST TWO scholarly BOOK
REVIEWS of each of the books.

Choose the reviews from the SCHOLARLY BOOK REVIEW INDEXES.

     4. Make PHOTOCOPIES of TWO of your four scholarly studies, AND
TWO of the book reviews.

Bring these to class. I want to see them. If you fail to do so,
you will get a zero for this assignment. Why? because only if I look at your
materials personally will I be able to give you the most helpful feedback about them.

     5. Email me, by the due date for this assignment, the following
information:

     a. bibliographical references for the two scholarly studies AND
the two book reviews you will bring to class.

Use the same format you have used before; Last name of author,
First name. "Title of article or chapter of book". _Title of book or
journal" (volume and year of publication of journal/Place: publisher,
year of publication of book). Page numbers.

     b. Your notes on the TWO scholarly journals/chapters, and the TWO
book reviews, that you have photocopied; read; and carefully studied.
