Welcome to the Home Page for Prof. Furr's course GNHU 201 – 04
General Humanities I
Spring 2001

I plan to put on this page links to all kinds of course information and other material related to the readings in this course.
Please let me know if you find any relevant sites on the Internet that other students should know about.

Find Any MSU Student's Alpha Account (if they have one...)

Email me here if you have any questions, comments, criticisms, or problems.

NOTE: Finley, World of Odysseus, is Out of Print. BUT -- we are still going to use it. Here's how:

  • Libraries. Look in your local library. This book is a "classic", that almost every library will have.

    • Here is a link to most New Jersey public libraries -- unfortunately, few web pages and no phone numbers.

    • If you go to a good search engine, like Altavista, and search for your town library, you might find it, and be able to search its collection over the Internet. For example, I found the Clifton Public Library by putting +"Clifton Public Library" (+ sign and quotation marks included) in Altavista.

  • Used Books. Here is a link to an on-line Used Book service. I used them all the time -- I've bought maybe 30 books through them. They are a 'meta-site' -- they list used books from many different sellers. Order a copy from one of them -- you'll get it within a week (unless it's from abroad -- don't order from abroad). Put "Finley" (no quotes) in the Author: field, and "World of Odysseus" (no quotes) in the Title: field, and search.

    • NOTE: When I looked today, this link took me to a long list of copies of World of Odysseus available through AddAll, for $10 or less. But I don't know if it will work forever. Try it. If it doesn't work, go back to the basic link above.

PLEASE REMEMBER: You must have at least two e-mail addresses for this course. You can sign up for an "Alpha" account in any MSU computer lab (ask the lab assistant). To get  free web-based e-mail, go to one of these two indexes:

FREE ISP's: That's right, you can get on-line for free, usually with some advertisements on  your screen. This is a great service when your ISP (AOL, MSU's own ISP, etc.) is down. Here are some directories:

IMPORTANT:   Whenever you email me, use the proper subject line:

Subj: Yourlastname  GH   date assignment is due

For example, if your last name is 'Robertson' and your are emailing me the assignment for February 1

Subj: Robertson  GH February 1 (or, 2/1, or Feb. 1, etc.)

If you don't, I'll forward your e-mail right back to you.
