Second Assignment on Toby Lester, "What Is The Koran?"
Please make certain you have read all three parts of Lester's article, "What Is
The Koran?", from The Atlantic Monthly, on-line edition, very
carefully.
Here
is the link to the first of the three parts. The links to the other
parts are at the end of this one.
For Tuesday you wrote about how Islam might look different
according to the research of the latest scholars on the Koran.
For Friday, please reread the article. Then, write about at least
TWO important issues raised by the textual research being done by
Koranic scholars.
NAME the scholars you are discussing. DISCUSS what they are
doing, methodologically, with the texts. DO NOT USE ANY DIRECT
QUOTATIONS. Show you understand the issues involved. Comment on the
question of method.
You may wish to review what Winspear and Silverberg had to say
about the issue of "idealism vs. materialism," in Who Was
Socrates?. The direct link to this part of the text (part 1,
pages 26 to the end) is here
and the next sections, to the end of Part I.
