English Major Requirements (Fall 2004 to Summer 2011)

Required Course

ENGL 200/300: The Pursuits of English (EMA will accept either ENGL 200 or ENGL 300 for this requirement.)

Major Requirements and Guidelines

1.  Literature: Four literature courses. One course must pay significant attention to literature written prior to the year 1800. One must pay significant attention to literature written prior to 1900.

c.  Other Literature (1c)

d.  Other Literature (1c)

2.  Writing: One writing-intensive course. A course devoted to writing or one in which writing receives significant and focused attention as a mode of inquiry and expression. Courses which ask students to write only to demonstrate knowledge or mastery of course material do not satisfy this guideline.

3.  Genre: Significant attention to at least three of these four genre poetry, fiction, drama, or film.

a.  Poetry

b.  Fiction

c.  Drama

d.  Film


4.  Satisfy all of the following five guidelines:

a.  Multinational Study:  Significant attention to texts or films from at least one literature or culture other than American or British.

b.  Minority Writers:  Significant study of several writers from one or more minority cultures of this country, either in courses concentrating on them or in more general courses in which a significant number of the texts come out of minority cultures.

c.  Women Writers:  Significant study of women writers, either in courses concentrating on them or in more general courses in which a significant number of the texts are by women.

d.  Gender Studies:  Significant study of the development and/or expression of gender roles or identities in literary texts or films.

e.  Class Issues:  Significant study of issues of social class in literary texts or films.
