Undergraduate Initial Teacher Certification Program
Director: Laura Nicosia
Montclair State University’s English Education Program has been committed to educational excellence and innovation since its inception. This certificate program is characterized by a curriculum that emphasizes strong disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge, teaching for critical thinking, the need for teachers to be stewards of best practice, and the importance of providing pedagogically valid environments for teaching and learning.
All interested undergraduate students must apply for admission to the English Education Program and must have accumulated sufficient credits in the major (at least 9) to allow a computation of a 3.0 GPA in the major and a 2.75 overall.
We strongly suggest that students apply in beginning of the second semester of their sophomore year, if all prerequisites have been fulfilled. Waiting to apply to the program only complicates efforts to graduate in a timely fashion. Students may access the application packet at: http://cehs.montclair.edu/academic/cop/teacher/undergrad.shtml, call the office of Teacher Admissions at 973-655-7976, or visit University Hall, Suite 1160 for complete application instructions.
As with all English majors, students with an English Education concentration must complete all General Education courses, successfully complete at least eleven courses in the major and fulfill all other requirements with regard to genre and topical areas as specified in Part II of the English Major Guidelines. Teacher Education students must maintain a grade point average in the major of 3.0 (B).
We suggest that all English Education students pursue obtaining a Substitute Teacher’s License from the State of New Jersey and investigate taking the Praxis Examination (#10041) early in their program of studies to prepare for various Fieldwork experiences and to begin the professional journey.
