* Classes that will be offered for Spring 2011
JAST220 - The Synagogue School in the American Sunday School Movement
This course explores the historical and socio cultural foundations of the Jewish American synagogue movement as part of the Sunday school movement in the United States. Topics in education, curriculum, materials and assessment development as well as pedagogical approaches to second/foreign language and languages for specific purposes will be studied as they relate to multiple models of the Jewish American k-12 supplementary education. This class serves as a core class in the Jewish American Studies minor. Prerequisite(s):ENGL105/ENGL106 0r JAST201
JAST 219 - The Holocaust and the American Press
This course will explore the press's role in two central questions concerning America's connection to the Holocaust from 1933-1945: What did the public know, and when did it know it? Then, if the public and certainly the government knew, why was nothing done to stop it? This intense course will combine journalism, history, anthropology, religion and ethics, and will draw from these disciplines, providing students with a broader view of their respective areas of concentration. In addition to lectures and history reading, there will be videos, copies of old newspapers, historic reporting on the Holocaust, and hopefully in-person testimony from Holocaust survivors. A research paper in the archives of media from the period will be required. It is an elective course in both the Jewish American Studies and Journalism minors. Cross-listed with ENGL 219. Prerequisite ENGL 105/106 or JAST 201.
