Institutional Profile/Professional Responsibilities

Chairperson at a comprehensive four year public institution with approximately 14,500 students, with approximately nine full time faculty and twenty two adjunct faculty and visiting specialists. The department of Legal Studies had two undergraduate minors: PreLaw Studies and Paralegal Studies, a concentration in Paralegal Studies in the interdisciplinary Justice Studies major, a graduate certificate program in Paralegal Studies, a graduate degree program: Master of Arts in Legal Studies with approved concentrations: Dispute Resolution, Governance, Compliance and Regulation, Legal Management, Information and Technology Law and Crime, Intellectual Property and General Course of Study  and a major in Jurisprudence. There were 125 majors in the Paralegal Concentration in the Justice Studies Program, 72 minors in the PreLaw Studies, 54 minors in the Paralegal Studies program and 51 students in the Master of Arts in Legal Studies Program. The Paralegal Studies Program has been reapproved by the American Bar Association.

Created in 2006 the department of Justice Studies has three minors in Criminal Justice, Environmental Justice and Families and Justice, a major in Justice Studies with four concentrations in Justice Systems, Paralegal Studies, Environmental Justice and Child Advocacy. There are 635 Justice Studies majors and 100 minors. 

Strategic Planning
  • Authored the Department of Legal Studies strategic plans consistent with Montclair State University Vision 2008 initiative.
  • Completed faculty-led review of all departmental program offerings as well multi-disciplinary initiatives with the School of the Arts, the College of Science and Mathematics and College of Education and Human Services.
  • Led Department of Legal Studies through budget reductions of approximately $250,000 during a period in which enrollment increased at the graduate and undergraduate level by over forty percent.
Organizational Improvements
  • Reorganized the annual administrative release time previously allocated to the Department of Legal Studies from sixty credits release time to twenty one credits release time.
  • Reinitiated the New Jersey Law Admission Day with the participation of fifty law school admission officers.
  • Coordinated departmental participation  in the Learning Communities institutional initiative.
  • Participated in the 2002 General Education initiative creating the model for team taught interdisciplinary courses.
  • Implemented class scheduling in a seven day a week model to address issues for part time and evening students.
  • Restructured the Campus Mediation Center to provide field experience to the candidates in the Master of Arts in Legal Studies and mediation services to the Graduate School and the Office of Residence Life.
Faculty/Curriculum Issues
  • Authored the three volume folio for the reapproval of the Paralegal Studies Program by the American Bar Association. Seven year re-approval granted in August 2004. Authored interim reports (February 2004 & 2006).
  • Led and authored the two volume folio for the external evaluation of the Master of Arts and PreLaw Studies Program.
  • Developed and authored the program approval document for the new multidisciplinary major in Jurisprudence.
  • Developed and authored the program approval document for the new concentration in Law and Crime in the Master of Arts in Legal Studies.
  • Developed and authored the program approval document for the proposed major in Paralegal Studies.
  • Created five new graduate courses for the proposed Law and Crime concentration (Comparative Legal Systems, International Criminal Law, Evidence, Terrorism: Statutory and Regulatory Perspectives, Juvenile Law Criminal Trial Preparation)
  • Created the comprehensive examination alternative to the thesis requirement for the Master of Arts in Legal Studies.
  • Created five graduate courses in Master of Arts in Legal Studies (Family Mediation, Cross Cultural Conflict Resolution, Ethical and Professional Issues for the Legal Professional and Thesis Seminar in Legal Studies)
  • Developed doctoral level requirement in Environmental Law and Policy for the doctorate in Environmental Management.
  • Created graduate elective in Entertainment Law for the Master of Arts in Theater Management.
  • Developed with the School of the Arts the new graduate degree in Theater Management.
  • Created undergraduate elective in Hospitality Law for the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management.
  • Created undergraduate elective in Consumer Law for the Consumer Affairs Concentration in the College of Education and Human Services
  • Developed and taught the interdisciplinary team taught General Education elective GNED 202 Contemporary Issues: National Issues   Deconstructing the Sopranos: Legal and Psychological Perspectives.
  • Developed new course in Feminist Jurisprudence for the multidisciplinary major in Jurisprudence
  • Participated in the multi disciplinary team to create the Bachelor of Arts in Women Studies.
  • Participated in the creation of the multidisciplinary Justice Studies major which is the third largest major with approximately 635 majors.
  • Created four undergraduate electives in the Justice Studies major (Perspectives in Justice Studies I and II, Theoretical Issues in Justice Studies and Evidence)
Diversity/Faculty Issues
  • Drafted the governance document for the President’s Commission for Affirmative Action, Latin American Latino Studies minor, the Justice Studies Program and the Women Studies major.
  • Increased diversity in the department of Legal Studies, recruiting four minority faculty and two women faculty members.
  • Chair of the first Presidential Task Force for Student Achievement.
  • Authored the final report which led to reorganization of academic advising, freshman experience, Admissions and Enrollment Management.
  • Increased grant activity through the creation of the bilingual initiative of the Paralegal Public Interest Clinic.
