Justice Studies Club

Our Mission:

The Justice Studies Club is a place where all students can voice any opinions, concerns, ideas, or questions in a just atmosphere. Our focus is to share views, increase awareness and affect positive change. One way we hope to achieve our goal is by organizing community service events having a connection to the field of justice. Ultimately, we hope to raise a consciousness of the just and unjust, beyond our immediate environment.

Our Founders:

John Curtis began his college career at Morris County College where he majored in Criminal Justice and later transferred to Montclair State University. He was impressed with the multi-disciplinary Justice Studies program offered and felt that getting an education in such a way would be beneficial to him in the long term. John recently completed his internship with the United States Marshall's Service in Newark where he wishes to obtain employment.

Lisa Gulisano was also a transfer student. Initially, she attended Ithaca College in New York transferring to Rutgers University, before finally relocating to Montclair State University in Spring 2001. Originally planning to major in Education, Lisa decided on Sociology and Justice Studies with a minor in Human Services. She completed an internship at the Winona M. Lipman Child Advocacy Center and graduated in May, 2003. Lisa plans on returning to Montclair State University for graduate school in the Educator Trainer Program, and aspires to teach at the higher education level.

Membership:

The Justice Studies Club is still a fairly new organization and with steady support can continue to grow. New members are always welcome. Please contact the Club's advisor Dr. Reginia Judge for information on new membership.

Club Accomplishment :

  • Spring 2004: Co-sponsored "The 'Real' Law School Experience" which informed students of the different stages towards pursuing a law degree.
  • Spring 2004: Easter Egg Hunt for the 23 children of the YCS Holley Child Care and Development Center in Newark. In addition to finding the plastic eggs filled with candy, the children got to play games and take pictures with the Easter Bunny.
  • Spring 2004: Held a bake sale to raise money to purchase art supplies for Creative Heartwork, Inc. The organization is designed to provide support and comfort to children who have undergone a traumatic life experience. Dr. Karen Carbonello, an adjunct professor at MSU is the President and Chairperson for Creative Heartwork, Inc.
  • Fall 2003: Participant in the American Heart Association Heart Walk held in Roseland, NJ.
  • Spring 2003: Sponsored a forum which featured Kirk Bloodsworth, the first person exonerated from death row by DNA evidence and Dr. Gerald Guzy, a forensic dentist who assists in crime scene investigations and was a member of the 9/11 identification team for victims. This event had a tremendous turn-out and was interesting as well as informative for all students.
  • Spring 2003: Held a bake sale to raise money for the Paterson Juvenile Justice Village Initiative Program. Our profits allowed all of the youth to be provided with lunch on their field trip to the Liberty Science Center.
  • Fall 2002: Sponsored a Toy Drive: "Turn a Frown Upside Down." The tremendous assistance of our university allowed for great success. One hundred children from the Montclair Head Start Program benefited from our efforts and received wonderful holiday gifts. We hope to continue with the tradition.
