MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION GRADUATE STUDENT CITATION AWARD

The following announcement was sent to all deans and department chairs by Marla Grundt, Director of Alumni Relations. I want to encourage you to nominate graduate students who you believe meet the criteria for this award.

The Alumni Association encourages and recognizes outstanding academic performance at the graduate level. The award consists of a certificate and check for $1000. Please read the attached carefully. If you have any questions, please contact me at ext. 4403 or the Alumni office at ext. 4141.

NOMINATIONS:

Nominations for these awards are sought from graduate faculty through each school/college or department. Written nominations, with supporting information, should be forwarded by the department chair to the appropriate school/college dean by the December prior to the year of ceremony. The material submitted also should include statements indicating past and projected scholastic quality from at least two faculty members and evidence of an original/unique contribution to the student's discipline or area of study.

Nominations for this prestigious award should occur only when the criteria below are met.

CRITERIA:

To be nominated for this award a student must:

• be matriculated in a graduate degree program;
• have completed by December of the present academic year 60% of the graduate work required for the degree to be awarded the following May, August, or January;
• have maintained a minimum 3.5 grade average in all graduate studies until the time of nomination;
• have faculty assurance of a continued superior grade point average and other performance throughout remaining graduate study at Montclair;
• be in the process of, or have completed, an original/unique contribution to his/her discipline or area of study. This contribution to his/her discipline or area of study need not be a thesis but can be a substantial paper or project prepared for a course in the degree program.

SELECTION:

A committee of graduate faculty from each school and college will serve as the initial screening committee making its recommendation to the Dean of the Graduate School by late January . Each school/college should nominate one candidate for each award. A committee of the Alumni Association will review the nominations and supporting documents and make final recommendations to the executive board of the Alumni Association.

PRESENTATION:

The awards will be presented at the Awards Ceremony in the Spring.
