IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS

(Effective Fall 1997)

Requirements

The M.A. in Applied Linguistics requires the successful completion of 36 semester hours of course work, a 1 semester-hour research requirement, and a comprehensive exam The 36 s.h.'s include a core of 18 s.h.'s required of all students. The remaining 18 s.h.'s will be chosen from among the approved electives in consultation with the Graduate Advisor.

* Waived for students with a background in linguistics; an additional elective is to be taken.

II. ELECTIVES Group I

Students select at least 2 of the following 7 courses: 6 s.h.

Additional courses taken from Group I will also count towards a student's electives. These courses, which are numbered by decades (510, 520, 530, 540, 550, 560, and 570), introduce students to particular subfields within Applied Linguistics. The material covered in the courses listed under III. below has a greater degree of specificity.

+ Students seeking certification in TESL as a second teaching field must take these electives from Group I and from Group II. APLN 529 TESL Practicum does not count as an elective for the M.A. in Applied Linguistics but is a New Jersey State Requirement for TESL certification as a 2nd teaching field.

** In consultation with the Linguistics Department's Graduate Advisor, students may elect to take up to 3 courses from a list of appropriate courses offered by other departments.

IV. RESEARCH REQUIREMENT

APLN 605 Independent Research (1 s.h.)

All students will be required to do an original piece of linguistics research presented as a paper of at least 30 pages. This paper may be a revised and polished form of one written for a graduate course in Linguistics. The paper will be read and approved by three faculty members from the department. A twenty-minute oral presentation of the research will be given by the student as a Linguistics Department Colloquium.
