Comprehensive Exam.

All students must take a comprehensive examination within one year of completing the course work. The exam will take approximately fours hours and must be written without the use of notes, books, articles, tapes, or other materials. Students must pass the comprehensive exam before a Master's Thesis topic will be approved.

Thesis

All students must write a thesis on an approved topic in Applied Linguistics. The procedure for approval will be as follows: the student will submit a detailed proposal describing the topic and the method of investigation. A faculty committee will evaluate the proposal and grant approval to pursue the topic if they find the topic and the proposal suitable. If they do not find the proposal satisfactory, they may ask the student to rewrite all or part of it. Once the topic is approved, the student will be assigned a thesis advisor and a committee consisting of the advisor and two other members. This committee then has the responsibility of approving the completed thesis when it is finished to their satisfaction.

Students will work on the thesis while enrolled in LNGN 610 (Seminar for Thesis Students in Applied Linguistics). If the thesis is not completed by the end of the course, the student will receive an Incomplete grade, which will remain on the student's transcript until the thesis is approved.
