Adjunct Information Page
Welcome to teaching at Montclair
State University's
Linguistics Department.
We've organized this Web page to answer the questions you need to have
answered in order to teach effectively. As you ask other questions, we will
try to supply answers here. Please contact the Webmaster at johnsond@mail.montclair.edu
with your questions.
Getting
Started
We need the
following documents from you in order to get you into Montclair State's personnel system:
• Your resume
• Two letters of
reference
• Passport
• Driver's
license
• Social security
card or paystub showing your social security number
• Official
transcripts from the institutions of higher education from which you have a
degree
• A Federal W4 tax document that you can print here or get in the
department office.
A New Jersey State W4
tax document that you can print here
or get at the department office.
•
An Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) form
that you can print here
or get in the department office.
• A Pension Questionnaire that you can print here (scroll down
to “Pension Questionnaire for Adjunct Faculty and Visiting
Specialists” to get
a PDF or MSWord document) or get in the department office.
• An Education, Gender, and Ethnic Information form that you can
print here
(scroll down to “”Education, Gender, and Ethnic Information”
to get a PDF or MSWord document) or get in the department office.
• An Adjunct Application and Qualification form that you can print here (scroll down
to “Adjunct Application and Qualification Form”) or get in the
department office.
Getting
Paid
It is vital
that you submit all necessary paperwork in order to minimize delays in
finalizing your appointment and to ensure that you will be paid in a timely
fashion. Once all paperwork is submitted, paychecks will be issued and
mailed every two weeks. Depending on the pay period, a partial payment
may be given to you, followed by a supplementary check the next week to catch
you up with the regular payment schedule.
The payroll schedule is
located here.
Getting
an E-mail Account
Getting an
e-mail account is the first step in using other net-based systems available
to instructors, for example Blackboard, web pages, etc. In order to
obtain an email address account, all paperwork must be given to the
department secretary. In turn, the secretary submits the paperwork to
Human Resources who will review all documents for completeness. If all
paperwork is in order, the appointee’s birth date is input to the
system to establish an email account. The appointee
can then go to the website listed below and follow the instructions
provided to open an email account.
1. Create your NetID Account by completing the online MSU NetID Account Form at http://netid.montclair.edu.
2. Your NetID Account will provide you with e-mail
access.
Parking
Once your
paperwork is completed, you can pick up a hang tag from the MSU Parking
Services Office at the front entrance to the Red Hawk Deck. You just need to
give them your name and they will give you a form that asks for your license
plate number and car make and model. You can get information on parking
services, including the list of parking lots that are available to you here.
Student Evaluations
Student
Evaluations are distributed to each instructor near the end of each semester.
The instructor is responsible for asking a student to administer the
evaluation forms to the students at the first fifteen minutes of the class or
the last fifteen minutes of the class. It is helpful to know the course
number when distributing the forms (e.g., ESOL 173 01), as the students need
to put this information on the form. While the students are filling out the
forms, the instructor is required to leave the room until such forms
are completed. The selected student is responsible for returning the forms to
the department secretary. Once the course is over and grades have been
posted, instructors can have access to their evaluations.
Final
Grades
The date of the submission of the final grades will be posted in the course
schedule booklet for the semester, which may be found here. If the
grades are not recorded on time, the students risk receiving an F in the
course and the instructor is required to fill out a change of grade form for
each student. Grades for the Fall semester are due at the end of December. The
exact due date will be distributed by the department chair along with web
grading instructions at Thanksgiving.
Ordering Desk Copies
You may be able to order desk copies or review materials for your personal
use, depending on the policy of the publisher. Listed below are publishers
that the Linguistics Department commonly uses. Check the Web site to see what
the policy is for the publisher that you are interested in.

Copying
Instructors are
expected to adhere to copyright regulations in using department copying
facilities.
Each floor in Dickson
Hall has a mail/copy room. Instructors are issued individual copy cards for
course needs. These cards are paid for by the Linguistics Department and
distributed by the department secretary. There is a
finite number of copies per card. Please limit copying because of budgetary
restraints and use the Ricoh machine, which does not require a card, for 20
copies or more per original. For problems and/or paper, call the CHSS Tech
Team at ext. 7835.
Canon Copier:
- Use
only for fewer than 20 copies of the original
- place copy card in meter
before using the Canon copier
- follow Canon instructions
- press end button on meter
to remove copy card
Ricoh Copier:
- no card is necessary
- obtain access number from
department secretary
- must make a minimum of
20 copies per master copy
Computer
Lab Keys
Some language
courses have a computer lab component. Instructors must contact the CHSS
Tech Team at ext. 7835 for the lab key and alarm code.
Practicum
Supervision
ESL adjuncts
may be asked to host practicum students in their classes as part of their
instructional assignment.
Office
Hours
Adjunct professors are expected to hold one office hour for each course
taught. Please give your chosen hour(s) to the department secretary so she
can post them on your office door.
Being
Observed
Adjunct professors are observed in their teaching once a year, either by the
chair of the department or a designated representative. You will be notified
of the observation and asked for appropriate times for the observation. It is
helpful if you provide an outline of the class to the observer beforehand or
when they enter the class.
