Students
with a
baccalaureate
degree and
interest in
teaching may
earn the
Master of
Arts in
Teaching
(MAT) and a
teaching
certificate
simultaneously.
The program
is open to
students who
wish to
teach French
in K-12
schools.
Students
wishing to
pursue a
Master of
Arts in
Teaching
(MAT) in
French at
Montclair
State
University
must provide
evidence of
an
undergraduate
major of at
least 30
credits in
French.
Where there
is no
evidence of
30
undergraduate
credits in
French,
students
will have to
take the
appropriate
undergraduate
courses as
pre-requisites
for
admission in
the MAT
program.
Upon
successful
completion
of the M.A.T.
program,
students are
recommended
to the New
Jersey
Department
of Education
for a
Certificate
of
Eligibility
with
Advanced
Standing
which
enables them
to pursue a
full-time
teaching
position in
a public
school. New
teachers
must
successfully
complete a
one year
induction
program of
teaching
under a
provisional
certificate
to be
eligible for
a permanent
or standard
New Jersey
instructional
certificate.
PART I -
FRENCH
COMPONENT

Prerequisites |

A course in
psychology,
fulfillment
of all
requirements
stipulated
by the
teaching
field
department,
and an
academic
background
of at least
60 semester
hours of
general
education,
distributed
among the
arts,
humanities,
math,
science,
technology,
and the
social
sciences.
Unfulfilled
prerequisites
will be
listed on
the
student's
official
work program
and are
considered
requirements
for the
degree. A
memorandum
from the
departmental
teacher
education
advisor of
the teaching
field must
be
submitted,
listing
major
(teaching-field)
course work
necessary
for
certification
and/or the
M.A.T.
degree.
Those
students who
have not had
a course in
human
biology or
health must
successfully
complete an
examination
in
physiology
and hygiene.
Thus,
candidates
who have not
already done
so in their
previous
academic
work must be
prepared to
take courses
to satisfy
the
following
requirements:
an
introductory
course in
psychology,
an
educational
psychology
course, a
course in
human and
intercultural
relations.
They must
also satisfy
a speech
proficiency
requirement,
a physiology
and hygiene
requirement,
and pass the
appropriate
PRAXIS
examination. |

the

graduate
credits

not

reduced

Quantitative

Important:
International
students are
required to
have as part
of their
application
file the
World
Educational
Services
(WES) course
equivalency
evaluation,
as well as
adequate
Test of
English as a
Foreign
Language
(TOEFL)
results.
Typically, TOEFL
is required
of all
students who
have degrees
from
institutions
in countries
where
English is
not the
language of
instruction.
The
Graduate
Record
Examination
(GRE) is
also
required of
all students
(citizens
and
non-citizens
of the
United
States)
seeking to
enter the
program.
Scores from
these tests
must be sent
to MSU
directly by
ETS
(Educational
Testing
Services),
the
organization
that
administers
the above
tests. As of
December
2003,
Montclair
State
requires GRE
scores of at
least 425 in
the Verbal
and
Quantitative
components,
and 2.5 in
the Writing
Assessment. TOEFL scores
must be 550
minimum.
International
students who
earned
graduate and
undergraduate
degrees in
countries
where
English is
not the
language
of
instruction will also be
asked to
take the MSU
ESL
placement
test and
score at
Level IV or
higher. Students who
are admitted
but did not
score at
this level
may be
required to
take English
classes that
will help
them improve
their
command of
both spoken
and written
English.
