MASTER OF ARTS DEGREE IN TEACHING

M.A.T. IN FRENCH: REQUIREMENTS

DISCLAIMER: The information hereby provided is an attempt to guide students and provide an area where pertinent information regarding our programs can be found. However, it is important to note that the information herewith contained is subject to change at any time and may quickly become outdated or obsolete due to policy changes or slowness to update this page with new details. Please always contact the appropriate program advisors of each concerned department for the most recent announcements and policy changes. These include the Graduate School, the Department of Curriculum and Teaching and the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures.

Students with a baccalaureate degree and interest in teaching may earn the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and a teaching certificate simultaneously. The program is open to students who wish to teach French in K-12 schools.

Students wishing to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in French at Montclair State University must provide evidence of an undergraduate major of at least 30 credits in French. Where there is no evidence of 30 undergraduate credits in French, students will have to take the appropriate undergraduate courses as pre-requisites for admission in the MAT program.

Upon successful completion of the M.A.T. program, students are recommended to the New Jersey Department of Education for a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing which enables them to pursue a full-time teaching position in a public school. New teachers must successfully complete a one year induction program of teaching under a provisional certificate to be eligible for a permanent or standard New Jersey instructional certificate.

PART I - FRENCH COMPONENT

A. PREREQUISITE

Show evidence of a "coherent" undergraduate major in French (30-39 credits), or evidence of at least 30 credits of courses taken in French. Twelve (12) of the required credits must have been earned in courses at the 300 level or higher.

B. REQUIRED COURSES (6-12 credits)

Two (2) to four (4) French graduate classes (6-12 semester hours)
(see Graduate Program Coordinator for details).

Additionally, students who have not taken it will be required to take the teaching methods class (FREN 419 – Teaching French in Secondary Schools) offered by the Department.

PART II - EDUCATION COMPONENT

EDUCATION CLASSES (Minimum 47 credits)

Take a number of education classes, including student teaching. The sequence below is a sample sequence for MAT students. Consult with the Department of Curriculum and Teaching for more specific and up-to-date requirements.

Prerequisites

A course in psychology, fulfillment of all requirements stipulated by the teaching field department, and an academic background of at least 60 semester hours of general education, distributed among the arts, humanities, math, science, technology, and the social sciences. Unfulfilled prerequisites will be listed on the student's official work program and are considered requirements for the degree. A memorandum from the departmental teacher education advisor of the teaching field must be submitted, listing major (teaching-field) course work necessary for certification and/or the M.A.T. degree.  Those students who have not had a course in human biology or health must successfully complete an examination in physiology and hygiene. Thus, candidates who have not already done so in their previous academic work must be prepared to take courses to satisfy the following requirements: an introductory course in psychology, an educational psychology course, a course in human and intercultural relations. They must also satisfy a speech proficiency requirement, a physiology and hygiene requirement, and pass the appropriate PRAXIS examination.

Students must follow their official work programs of study, which they will receive upon their acceptance to the program.

However, the number of graduate credits may not be reduced below 32, and other requirements of the University and Teacher Certification Program still apply.
