SECOND TEACHING FIELD IN RUSSIAN

DISCLAIMER: The information hereby provided is an attempt to guide students and provide an area where pertinent information regarding our programs can be found. However, it is important to note that the information herewith contained is subject to change at any time and may quickly become outdated or obsolete due to policy changes or slowness to update this page with new details. Please always contact the appropriate program advisors of each concerned department for the most recent announcements and policy changes. These include the Graduate School, the Department of Curriculum and Teaching and the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures.

Students already holding teaching certificates in areas other than Russian who wish to teach Russian in K-12 schools in New Jersey may apply to the University to take additional coursework leading to the Second Teaching Field Certification in Russian. Note that Students seeking additional endorsements or advanced certificates are not eligible for the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program. However, other education-related master's programs are available and are described on links under the Graduate School.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are recommended to the New Jersey Department of Education for a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing which enables them to pursue a full-time teaching position in a public school. New teachers must successfully complete a one year induction program of teaching under a provisional certificate to be eligible for a permanent or standard New Jersey instructional certificate.

Students seeking Second Teaching Field Teacher Certification in Russian must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and follow the sequence below. It is expected that candidates for Second Teaching Field Teacher Certification in Russian demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken Russian.  Their academic backgrounds should include courses in language (grammar, phonetics, etc) and culture (literature and civilization).  If they have not already taken the equivalent of 30 credits in Russian, at least twelve of which are at the 300-level or higher, these courses should be taken at Montclair State University as part of their academic program.
