Students
already
holding
teaching
certificates
in areas
other than
Russian
who wish to
teach
Russian
in K-12
schools in
New Jersey
may apply to
the
University
to take
additional
coursework
leading to
the Second
Teaching
Field
Certification
in Russian.
Note that
Students
seeking
additional
endorsements
or advanced
certificates
are not
eligible for
the
Master of
Arts in
Teaching
(M.A.T.)
program.
However,
other
education-related
master's
programs are
available
and are
described on
links under
the
Graduate
School.
Upon
successful
completion
of the
program,
students are
recommended
to the New
Jersey
Department
of Education
for a
Certificate
of
Eligibility
with
Advanced
Standing
which
enables them
to pursue a
full-time
teaching
position in
a public
school. New
teachers
must
successfully
complete a
one year
induction
program of
teaching
under a
provisional
certificate
to be
eligible for
a permanent
or standard
New Jersey
instructional
certificate.
Students
seeking
Second
Teaching
Field
Teacher
Certification
in Russian must be
admitted to
the Teacher
Education
Program and
follow the
sequence
below.
It is
expected
that
candidates
for Second
Teaching
Field Teacher
Certification
in Russian
demonstrate
proficiency
in written
and spoken
Russian.
Their
academic
backgrounds
should
include
courses in
language
(grammar,
phonetics,
etc) and
culture
(literature
and
civilization).
If they have
not already
taken the
equivalent
of 30
credits in
Russian, at
least twelve
of which are
at the
300-level or
higher,
these
courses
should be
taken at
Montclair
State
University
as part of
their
academic
program. The
specific
requirements
of the
Second
Teaching
Field Teacher
Certification
program in
Russian are
as follows:

undergraduate
major
in
Russian
(30-39
credits),
or
evidence of
at

30
credits
of
courses
taken
in
Russian.

education
classes,

student
teaching, as
part of the
education
component.
The
education
component
represents

credits
minimum.
However, for
students who
already have
certification
in one area
and are
seeking
additional
certification
in Russian,
both the
education
classes
requirement
and the
student
teaching
component
may be
waived
altogether.
