The Fall 2009 Conference of the New Jersey Regional Philosophy Association
Welcome to the fall conference! We have a wide range of talks, from political philosophy to philosophy of music, ethics to metaphysics. The conference program is available, as well as drafts of all the papers being presented at the conference. >link to subpage with PDF files
The conference has 4 concurrent sessions running from 10am until 5:30pm, with lunch and a plenary address by Melinda Roberts of TCNJ on the moral significance of merely possible persons. (Abstract available on the conference program) There will be a reception after program events with light refreshments.
Registration for the conference will open at 9am in University Hall room 2004, and is $15 ($5 for students.) Registration includes lunch, reception and reimbursement for parking on campus. The conference has a limited number of passes for the Red Hawk Deck that may (or may not) be sufficient to reimburse all attendees – first come, first served. Bring the parking pass dispensed to you in the garage for exchange at the registration desk.
Handicapped access & parking are available. Call (973) 655-5144 for details.
Directions to campus and University Hall, and parking information:
By car: use Google Maps to navigate to 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair, NJ. Parking is available at the “Red Hawk Deck”, a large white parking garage on-campus. (Parking in other lots will get you a hefty ticket – they are patrolled on Saturdays!) Campus roads are currently suffering traffic pattern changes due to construction, so please check back on Friday night or Saturday morning for updated directions. Currently, you need to enter the campus (turn north) from Normal Avenue onto [road], and follow it around a left curve to enter the parking Deck on your right. Make sure to bring the parking ticket with you, so we can exchange it with a free pass at registration.
By mass transit: Currently, there is no train service on the weekend to MSU. The best option for New York residents is to take the DeCamp bus #66 ("NYC to West Orange") from NYC Port Authority. The bus will leave from gate 412 (fourth floor of Port Authority). The 8:30am bus will arrive near MSU at approximately 9am (you ought to arrive at the Port Authority gate 10-15 minutes early). You cannot give the bus driver cash; you will need to buy a ticket on the ground floor of Port Authority, at ticket windows #24 - 28; the windows say "Academy and DeCamp." The one way tickets are $6.50. (On the return trip, you can give the driver cash.) Once on the bus, ask to be dropped off at the Mt. Hebron @ Valley Road stop (perhaps you should tell the driver you are going to MSU). You will need to walk about 5 minutes northwards back along the route of the bus from that stop to get to the lower right-hand corner of the map on the program pamphlet.
Contact us (973-655-5144 or njrpa.fall.2009@gmail.com) for directions/travel advice from other locales.
Getting to University Hall from the Red Hawk Deck: You need to exit the opposite (north) side of the structure using the footbridge on the 5th level, and proceed northwards between the soccer pitch and Dickson Hall on your right. (Signs directing you to the “Conference Center” will be posted.) Once you enter University Hall, proceed down the hall to the main hall, and use the stairs or elevators to the 2nd floor. The registration room (UH 2004) will be right in front of you, and the other conference rooms are in that same hallway.
For speakers: Registration is waived, and we will have reserved parking passes at registration for you, if you have travelled by car. All conference rooms have a full suite of A/V, including document cameras, DVD players and projectors for PowerPoint. All you need is your laptop – bring your dongle if you have a Mac! If you have other requests, we will do our best to accommodate them – phone the department at 973-655-5144, or email njrpa.fall.2009@gmail.com.
