We offer an undergraduate major and minor that provides students with a strong general knowledge of the field and solid competence in statistics and research methods. Our program is affiliated with several interdisciplinary programs at MSU including Leadership Development Through Civic Engagement, Women and Gender Studies, African American Studies, LGBTQ, Asian Studies, and International Studies. Many of our courses are included as electives in other majors such as Justice Studies and Family and Child Studies.
With a general focus on social inequalities in gender, race, class, age, and other categories, our faculty have published in diverse areas such as Work and Occupations; Sexuality and the Body; Environmental Sociology; Crime, Deviance, and Law; Social Welfare; Health, Illness, and Medicine; Semiotics; Education; Theory; Social Demography; and Research Methods. In our spare time, we actively maintain Montclair SocioBlog.
Our strong commitment to learning and teaching, our active scholarship, and our proximity to New York City makes our department an excellent setting to pursue the BA degree in Sociology.
