Virgilio Campanería Angel: Last Letter*

Law student, leader of the Revolutionary Student Directorate, an association of university students

La Cabaña [prison], April 17, 1961

To my fellow students and to the people of Cuba

:Right now I am waiting for the sentence of the Tribunal that judged me.
I am not worried about death, because I faith in God and in the future of my country. My death will be another step backwards for those who think that they can drown in blood the yearning for liberty of the Cuban people.

I am not afraid; let death come. I am happy because I can foresee freedom for my country; I can see how my brothers jubilantly climb the glorious Hill. There will be no more hatred between brothers; there will be no more throats yelling “Paredón.” Everything will be love among Cubans, brotherly love, Christian love.

My poor Cuba! How much have you suffered! But a new Cuba springs from hatred to sow love; from injustice to sow justice; real social justice and not lying demagoguery. A new mature Cuba that knows all the deceptions and all the liars; a Cuba for Cubans, “with all and for the good of all.”

On you, student falls this glory to liberate the fatherland and to raise a new Cuba,

Viva Christ the King! Viva Cuba Libre! Viva the Revolutionary Student Directorate!
