| Summary of Events |
The most recent group of people voicing their opposition to government injustices and arbitrary acts, has adopted a non-violent modus operandi, reminiscent of Ghandi and the Civil Rights movement in the United States. They have created groups that denounce human rights abuses, groups that try to promote free elections, and groups that set up independent lending libraries in their homes. They have all been harassed, intermittently detained, subjected to house searches and many have lost their jobs.
In April of 2003, 79 dissidents were arrested, subjected to summary trials and sentenced to prison terms for up to 28 years. They have all been adopted as "prisoners of conscience" by Amnesty International.
