ITAL
375-02 Italian Literature of the
Renaissance
Taught
by Arizona State University Prof. Juliann Vitullo
This
course will focus on the Florentine writers from 1300-1550 who made their city
the cultural capital of the Italian peninsula and of Europe. Students will read and analyze works by
Dante, Boccaccio, and Machiavelli and also study the social, political, and

ENGL
250 Romancing Italy: English Romantic
Poets and/in Italy
Taught
by Arizona State University Prof. Mark Lussier
In
one of his best-known poems, the English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley
described Italy as a ÒParadise of Exiles,Ó a poetic acknowledgement that
numerous English writers left England to take up residence in Italy. Indeed,
the major poetry of Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley was actually conceived
and composed during their self-imposed exiles in Italy. This course will focus on the leading
English Romantic poets, Byron and Shelley, and the class will read a wide range
of their best-known works, including ByronÕs Childe HaroldÕs Pilgrimage,
The Giaour, Manfred, and Don Juan and ShelleyÕs Lines
Written Among the Euganean Hills, Julian and Maddalo, ÒMont Blanc,Ó
ÒHymn to Intellectual Beauty,Ó and Prometheus Unbound.
