Final Exam 30%

Please note that it is the policy of theClassics Departmentthat to obtain credit for a course, students must complete all requirements of that course in a satisfactory manner. In particular, this means that you must complete any required papers.

ATTENDANCE—Just being there is a contribution, so there is a carrot. Perfect attendance&151;no excuses!&151;will earn a 0.3 point bonus on the 4.0-point scale. Attendance for the bonus means being present for the entire class. Occasionally, those who miss only one class may be granted a small 0.1-point bonus.

E-MAIL ADDRESS—REQUIRED. If you do not already have e-mail, sign up for a free online account such as hotmail (http:/www.hotmail.com) or get an ALPHA ID. It takes about three minutes to activate or reactivate an Alpha account. Go to any lab, telnet to ALPHA.montclair.edu (you can use any telnet program: QVT, Better Telnet, NCSA Telnet, etc.) and sign in as STUDENT. At the menu, choose (1). There are complete, detailed directions at the following link:

How to Create an Alpha Account

IF YOU'RE LATE—YOU'LL MISS IMPORTANT STUFF. If you do end up walking in late it is up to you to find some way to learn what you missed. Try your classmates and WebCT. Don't call your professor and ask her to recapitulate the class session.

TESTS—MUST BE TAKEN WHEN SCHEDULED, but you can always try for an exception. If disaster strikes and you miss a test or other important class event, get in touch fast! Students who stroll into the next class session vaguely hoping for the best are likely to be disappointed.

CONTACTING THE PROFESSOR
OFFICE HOURS—FLEXIBLE. See top of page for "official" hours.
PHONE—Home phone during early evening (before 10 pm) is best time. See top of page for numbers.
E-MAIL—Professor will answer mail sent to husseins@mail.montclair.edu within a day or two.

WEBCT—THIS IS A WEB-ENHANCED CLASS. The WebCT resourse component will provide a daily calendar, a bulletin board, extra credit opportunities, guides, quizzes, review materials and syllabus changes. Plan now to visit the site often, from home, your dorm room, or a lab.

TOPICS & ASSIGNMENTS FOR SPRING 2001—CHANGES WILL BE MADE.

* Dates on the syllabus are dates BEFORE WHICH preparation should be done. Lectures and other class activities presuppose familiarity with the materials listed, and build on them.

* Most reading required for papers is already built into the course assignments.

* Most references in the assignments are to line numbers, e.g. HO:IL 24.1-744 means Book 24 of the Iliad, and includes the brief synopsis of lines 1-496 (in italics) plus lines 497-744 on pages 230-237 of your text.
