Applied Social Science Research The Institute for Community Studies supports the application of the social science disciplines to solving practical problems. The application of the principles and procedures of the social sciences beyond the academic realm not only benefits those who are affected by the problems, policies, or evaluations that are the topic of the research, but also benefits the social sciences by refining established thought and expanding areas of interest. Sociology, anthropology, and other social sciences need application in non-academic settings in order to remain useful. Knowledge that is not used becomes stagnant and meaningless. Therefore, the Institute for Community Studies applauds and supports applied social science research as well as engages in applied research projects of its own.
