CAR PROJECT

We will use the short story "Car Crash While Hitchhiking" by Denis Johnson as our inspiration.

GUIDELINES

Write a short story using first person narration (but that person shouldn't be you)

A car should be, in some way, a central part of the story.

Use 3 metaphors in your story.

FORMAT

a short story, 1 1/2 pages, single-spaced

At the top of your story, write your name, skip 2 lines, then write the title.

After the title, skip 2 lines, and write your "theme": in one sentence, explain a problem or source of tension that your story will address.

Then skip 2 lines and begin writing your story.

KEEP THIS IN MIND...

Even though your story introduces a problem, it does not need a "resolution."

Do not explain the story; do not tell us the meaning of the events.

Remember that your narrator is not you.

Try not to be moralistic. Try not to judge your characters, no matter what they do.

Begin the story "quickly."

** In general, explore the possibilities of understatement. **

Especially in your conclusion, explore the possibilities of understatement.
