Instructions for Assignment #3

Do one of the following:

1.  Read at least five recent research articles that investigate the age of arrival or age of onset in second or third language acquisition.  You must photocopy the first and last pages (conclusion and references) of each of these articles.  Prepare a critique and summary of the most recent findings concerning age as a factor in second language acquisition.  Do not exceed six pages.

2.  Audio-or videotape an interview with a poor L2 learner and do the same with a successful L2 learners.  What factors account for successful SLA acquisition/learning?  Describe the individual's stage/level of L2 development and the strategies he/she used in acquiring a second language.  You must transcribe at least a section of your interview and explain your rating of the learner's second language proficiency and fluency.  Do not exceed six pages and include the audio- or videotape and a sample of your transcribed interview.

3.  Audio- or videotape a child in the process of acquiring a second language.  Define the stages of L2 development, the order of acquisition, and the current rate of achievement.  Prepare a chart of these stages and include a five-page analysis and summary of the data.  Follow general transcription guidelines in order to transcribe at least 10 minutes of your audio- or videotape.
