As evidenced by the recent activity here and selectively elsewhere, given the opportunity, the citizens of our community, a people of intellect, will opt for participation in high end chat threads of value.

Obviously, there are more than 20 readers, they've just been reading silently, or more likely, waiting for something worth reading and posting to.

A few clueless types may not understand, but that's ok.

Union is watching. People care about their community, both in the real world and in cyber land.

I live under the east/west landing pattern for Newark Airport. Every plane on final approach using those runways, flies diagonally over our property. I mean all I have to do is look "straight" up. If they flew low enough, I could count the rivets.

Well, in the last couple of years, there have been one or two old time planes flying freight service in and out of Newark. I read about this in the newspaper. They are vintage WW2. Not jet turboprops whatevers, but honest to goodness gasoline burning engines and two big propellors. Beautiful huge wings, spread out for all to enjoy. I think they call them DC-3's or C-47's. I love the deep throaty sound they make. It is a mellow sound compared to modern jets. Because of that disticnt sound you know that one of these old warriors of yesteryear is slowly approaching. How fast could they possibly be going? 120mph? As they pass by, I often think back to my childhood when the four engine Constellations were flying.

For lack of a better description, I think it is a romantic sound, and when I hear it off in the distance, I stop whatever I am doing, and search the sky, aand enjoy the moment. Of course as I said, you may call me crazy.

Born and raised here, 1943. Lived on Martin Rd off Galloping Hill Rd. so I remember mostly about 5 pts area.

The big fire at Morey LaRue Cleaners that wiped out most of that shopping plaza. The Krauss farm where the A&P is now which was also a Texaco (?) gas station with the old glass top pumps.

How about Arnolds? Yes there was an Arnolds in Union! Right across from Petersons where Rite Aid is now. I remember the terrible accident at the Galloping Hill train crossing where a train ran into a vegatable truck and tore it in half (circa 1955).

We played stick ball at Hoppe park when Ms. Hoppe was our park counsellor. Obviously it wasn't called that then. Afterwards we would go to Whits Castle for a coke. How about those special White Castle coupons for 12 burgers for $1.00. My buddy Dean and I would chow down 6 each.

More later...

Not Union, Union County at least (no not because of bad elements) Union was our first choice, but we couldnt find a lease/option that was big enough for us right now. We left to refurbish a historical house, and sell it to move back, however, financially it took its toll on us. Im still in Union every weekend, and as much during the week as i can. Friends and family are all here, I still think of it as my hometown. My kids feel right at home. As far as "bad element", thats everywhere. Ill spend my time in Union anyday. Tee ps unionite.. thanx, its that comradery of unionites ive sorely missed

Two of my friends moved from Union within the last ten years. One moved to Poconos and the other to Hunterdon County. Both wanted more open space and a country setting. Both regret their decisions and are now trying to sell their properties and move back. Their main complaints are that they have to travel toofar to pick up groceries. Services are very very expensive, more than they anticipated. They have to travel too long to get to their jobs. And most of all they miss the community feeling and friends they made here.

Carmen's bread & rolls. Mr. Sub. Virginia's. All places you can go and feel at home. Friendly, everyday people. And there are many more such places in this town. Changing demographics have not changed the way people feel. Incoming folks take the lead from exisiting folks. Set the example. The new residents will see what made this town so great. It's the character of the people that matters, not their heritage or skin color.

No offense to anyone (such as J, who I know worked there) but I thought Jahn's sucked. There were bugs everywhere, the place smelled like a convalescent home, the wait staff was rude, and slow, and who needs a diner that closes early? Maybe in its heydey Jahn's was a nice place, but that was a long, long time ago. I'll take Union Plaza Diner over Jahn's anytime.

Although speaking "culinary wise" Jahns wasnt exactly on the top of my list, I do have GREAT memories of hanging out there with friends and family. So when it closed, I had my mother in law get me a menu, and I made sure to take a picture of the front of the restaurant. I put it together, and had it matted in a frame (ok, no laughing, im a union girl who is very homesick)and in my dining room it hangs!! (ok ok, i also saved a menu from winstons in mountainside, and Biases in Newark, but I DIDNT frame them)!

Many, many, many many many, many years ago, I took a young visitor to our country, to Jahns, for a treat. There was something of a language deficiency between us. In trying to explain the ice cream flavors and concoctions that were available, I played 20 questions. What fruits do you like, what do you like to snack on, etc. The young lady said she enjoyed pistachio nuts. So we ordered.

Green ice cream with pistachio nuts may well have been this young ladies first glimpse of all that the American Dream offers, thanks to Jahns.

Id check the Jahns menu for you if i could, but you'll have to wait two weeks until its unpacked in the new house. It was some kind of icecream concoction, I think it was something like an eggcream. Being Italian/Irish, it wasnt something that was learned at home. I just remember it being at the top of the icecream menu. Give me two weeks, and Ill look at the menu! Like I said in the above post, it wasnt really the food, but the people we went there for. Although, I have to say, I loved their potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce!!! happy day to all....tee

Sorry I forgot to mention. The spelling looks like the way I would phonetically pronouce a German/Hungarian word for a "Large Bowl" as in "a Schizzel of ice cream".

I guess the old Kitchen Sink, was also a schizzel. Please don't go crazy looking for a packed item. Moving is always crazy time and very exhausting and stressful. Best of luck to you in your new home, and many years of happiness.

Thanks for your fast response. BTW, A Peach Melba, or a Chocolate Chip/Mint Chip combo always did it for me. You are right about the people. If fairness to all our fine restaurants and diners, they all have a regular crowd, and you always bump into family, friends, and people from the town scene. Makes for a homey (sp?) kind of feeling.

Wasn't this thread about what people like in Union now? Then why is everyone writing about the past? Could it be that there really is nothing to like about present-day Union? Oh, that's right, barking dogs all night along, low flying planes every 10 minutes, and yes, my number one reason for loving Union these days - cars being stolen from in front of homes. What else do I love about Union? Grafitti on stores and homes, packs of young african-americans walking down the middle of the street and not allowing your car to pass, crazy drivers pulling out of the Tech School parking lot doing 55 down Winslow...should I go on? I would and I could, however, I don't want this to turn into a Ray editorial.

You are right! this town is washed up..unfortunatly all of you "Unionites" are to blind to see it..take a drive down by the old Hollywood toystore, I bet none of you people would consider living over there!! That is a part of your so called "Great Town" The only people who are defending this town are the people who live in the descent areas.

< Subject: RE: Things I like about Union >
< From: > The "descent" areas?
< Date: 27-Jul-99 >

There is no way that Union is anything like Irvington. Irvington looks like it "GAVE UP." Union has not GIVEN UP. People still care for their properties. There is a greater diversity of p eople in town, that's for sure. Many Portuguese and Philippino familes have moved into the town. As far as I can tell, they are continuing to care for their properties.

Why should the trailer park offend anyone??? A shooting can take place in Randolph as easily as it can in the trailer park. It's small. It's somewhat isolated. And guess what, REAL people live there. Real people with families and concerns. I think it's sickening the way people look down at them because they think they're a better quality human being.

And by the way, if you're so afraid of the so-called "lower class" ruining Union, you better read up on the Mt. Laurel housing laws. "Affordable" or low-cost housing is being erected in all of your so-called "better" communities as I write this. Like it or not, the whole state will become diversified. Then where will you hide?

As I said in another place: "Insecure bores!" Somehow, they don't believe that they are part of the picture, but can sit back and criticize others. Too bad for them, but thare are enough of us who care about our town and about each other as human beings to make change work as a positive force. The important thing is not to let these jerks cause us to doubt.

In keeping with the title of the thread, the thing I like about Union is the way the town is currently being managed and the people who are responsible for it.No,I am not a political affiliate, nor am I a shill-just an ordinary taxpayer who pays attention to what's going on.Those who think that "Union's Changing" missed the boat-Union changed, and it changed a while ago. Not the change that comes with socio-economic diversity, which will prove to be beneficial in the long run.Union changed dramitically from 1980-1995,and for different reasons, albeit each has it's roots in managerial priorities. The changes that occured during those years are like the changes that would occur in a human body infected with cancer-undetected until symptoms become apparent.

The things we see now that we don't like can be attributed to Anthony Russo's greed and self-fulfilling arrogance, Tom Strapp's pompousity and tunnel-vision,the relentless arrogance, dishonesty and avarice of Lou Giacona, the embarrassing criminality of Marc Bellotti, the drunkeness of Truhe and the gluttony of Neil Duffy, the complete idiocy of Greg Muller and Rich Mc Millan, the vanity and ego of Petti and the wanton hatred exhibited by his father, the hypocrisy of Jim Edwards-the list could go on but you get the picture.

These people all had hidden agenda whether it was for personal financial gain or the filling of voids due to personal flaws. The wrongs have been perpetrated and now the sour fruit has come to harvest.

The people charged with cleaning up this mess appear to me to be sincere in their efforts-history will tell. The thing I like is that they are all obviously competent, focused and diligent. They are real people, just like you and me and they have no problem with that.No airs to put on, no BS,just trying to get the town back on it's feet. We are in a renaissance(a rebirth,a revival)and quite honestly, whether they realize it or not, I think that the type of managerial style they are employing is somewhat "Biertuempful-esque".

They are out and about-especially Terrezza and Scanlon, they are well-versed on the business of government- especially Capodice, they are well-versed on delivery of services-especially Florio, they are well-versed on finance-especially Restivo and Capodice, they all talk to people, and more important, they listen-they're not rude nor condescending;they have established a presence in Town Hall- especially Restivo and Scanlon, and collectively they have begun to restore an air of confidence in our local government-something that was absolutely destroyed by the aforementioned list.

So,if you believe that the town is changing you are correct but it's changing in a positive way. Those who think the change is negative should have had their eyes open 15 years ago.And to those online vulctures who are swarming and ready to attack remember this-when the renaissance is complete I'll be here to celebrate and I'll remember who had the courage to step up to the plate!

< Subject: RE: Things I like about Union >
< From: >
< Date: 27-Jul-99 >

Restivo and Capodice are the only good names mentioned above. the rest are out only for themselves and not for OUR town.

I still feel this should not be a tread titled "Things I like about Union"........It should be "Things I LIKED about Union"

I couldn't agree more about what was said by untitled entry above.............we are becoming Irvington..........and, my friends................THAT' S NOT GOOD! Hollywood furniture and into Vauxhall & Stuyvesant are quickly feeling the changes.

As for the Kids in the street, not moving for cars....they should be ticketed for jaywalking and obstructing traffic.......if a driver should hit them.......it's the driver's fault! How insane! Parents or arrogant teens.........get your kids on the sidewalks where they will be safe. Why should drivers be penalized........I think the kids should be ticketed, and their parents issued warnings that if this were to happen again, there would be more blame also put on the parents! TEACH YOUR CHILDREN RESPECT FOR OTHERS AND OTHERS WILL HAVE RESPECT FOR THEM. WE DO NOT OWE THEM THE WORLD........OR OUR TOWN!

I am the person who started this thread. I don't particularly appreciate or enjoy seeing it trashed, like every other thread at this Localsource web site. Take it to "Gossip in Union", it belongs over there.

But since you opened the door, I do take offense at one statement. Why would you attack a man like Tom Strapp, who has always conducted himself as a professional. He is a man of intellect and integrity. He is capable, qualified, well educated and confident. In his field he is respected by his peers. He nevers plays kiss a_ _ with any of the politicians. He has always worked in the best interest of the citizens and taxpayers of this community. He is always polite and courteous when approached in the same manner. If people took the time to seek his advice, they usually came away the smarter for it.

Tom Strapp is definitely one of the things I like about Union!!!!!

Sorry I ruffled your feathers Pat J. I agree with you concerning Tom's capability insofar as engineering is concerned,BUT, he bends like a willow to please whoever is calling the shots. I suppose that assures longeivety in a political job but it's not healthy for the town. However, I stated that I was keeping within the spirit of the thread and the thing that I like about Union is the way the town is being managed and the people who are managing it.Period. I guess I may have went a little overboard with the editorial comments, but really they don't belong in the 'Gossip'thread either because they're true! By the way, suffice to say that I am in the majority of the folks in town who are pleased with the course the town is on,all things considered.

Allow me for a moment to back up my comment. As a leader of a civic association I was at the Township Committee meeting tonight to attend the reception afterwards in honor of the late Eleanor Ericcson-the beloved leader of Battle Hill who will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.Virtually every Civic Association was represented.Tom Murray who everyone knows claims to represent 'Five Points' but in all honesty represents himself attacked the Committee -doing a 360 degree turn regarding the "controversy" over the town ending the practice of free parking for Union Hospital. He admonished the Committee last month NOT to sell the lot to the hospital; now,he is on the hospital's side saying that the town shouldn't charge for parking.Reports have been issued which indicate the town will realize $400k-$600K annually in revenues-a healthy take and a major move to combat rising property taxes.Generally the civics support one another, but as everyone appears to agree this is a fiscally responsible move by the committee. So,Murray makes a fool of himself and not a single civic assn rep makes a move to back him up. I'd say that's an indication of a vote of confidence for the committee on the part of the citizenry. Also tonight the Fire Commisioner,Committeeman Scanlon announced a new method of replacing firefighters that I didn't quite fully get,BUT,what I did get was that by doing it this way the town will save something like $240K by next Feb.I think that the Police Commisioner, Commiteeman Capodice made a similar cxomment about new hires in the Police Dept.

Just backing up my statement about what I (and many others) like about Union.

I drive by the parking lots on Jeanette Ave. Does the town own both of them? The one across from the Boys Club seems to be full all the time. Maybe this would be another lot that could make money for the town? Does anyone know if there's a reason that they don't charge for parking there?

I've lived here just a few years and things I like about the town are: friendly neighbors who welcomed me, sports and activities for my kids, decent schools, proximity to New York.

This is the person who started this thread and took exception to your comments about TS. Just FYI, I am not Pat J. Is your paranoia showing?

To Whomever - If you don't know who TS is, you need to be more involved in community function. Start attending meetings. TS was the singular best township administrator this town has ever had in the modern era. TS always kept himself apart from political entanglements. He just did his job, and did it darn well. He looked right at you when he told you that you were wrong, but his job was only to advise and implement the directives of the elected officials. Period.

Please - all of you bashers, take it elsewhere.

I drive by Hollywood Furniture two or three times almost every day. Please tell me what "horror" I'm supposed to see there. There are usually always a few people standing by the funeral home waiting to catch a bus. Beyond that, it's pretty quiet on the street except for a few people walking. I've never seen a "gang" of kids walking in the street who refuse to move for drivers. I've seen that kind of behavior around the high school once in a while. Unfortunately, it's that herd mentality kicking in, and I also wish they would be ticketed for jaywalking. But I am sure that such behavior is not peculiar to Union's high school. Nevertheless, I often have to drive down a street in my neighborhood where kids are playing basketball on one of those portable hoops. They always move away for my car. They've never given me a hard time.

FYI, Bloomfield is not spelled U-N-I-O-N. You can look it up in the dictionary if you don't believe me. The title of this thread is "Things I Like About UNION", NOT Bloomfield.

In reference to young people walking in the middle of the street......try Glen Avenue after school. It's been that way for years. Also on other surrounding streets in that area. I have seen it many times over the years!....so, please don't say that it doesn't exist. It does.

I think Union is a great community to live in. You are right, there are changes, but for the better. Our world is diverse and people are people. There is no reason to run away. Like one person said, where will you go? To a culture that is 1 color..poor you...I like talking to my neighbors and I take pride in keeping my property clean. I would encourage others to do so. I do wish our town officials would be better about keeping the streets clean..more garbage cans etc etc

This is the person who started this thread. I am tired of seeing these posters bash this thread. Since they can't or won't participate in the true spirit of this thread, I ask you to just pull the plug on it. I can go elsewhere in cyberland.
